Trekking-2004: Where it All Began . . .

Life happens – and things like the simple pleasures are replaced by sitting on boards, mortgages and a host of socially expected obligations – like seeding and fertilizing, watering and cutting the lawn.  And then doing it all over again, and again.

And then that moment, talking to a long time friend and client, Bryan Mix in Prince George over lunch one day and he’s telling me about his 15th hike in to Berg Lake.  And I think “Brian oversees something like a $100 million dollar budget for his organization.  Early mornings, late nights, and yet he clearly found the time to hike”.

Within days, I’d talked my then girlfriend and future wife Coral into accompanying me (she didn’t resist a lot as hiking and camping was something that she’d done and enjoyed as a teenager).  A quick stop at Mountain Equipment Coop and we were on our way.  The rest is history, memories and the beginning of a lasting love with with trails, altitudes, occasional blisters, and great vistas.  Thanks for taking the journey with Coral and me.

Kilimanjaro 2011 – Trekking, Trucking and Treatment

In July, my wonderful and adventurous wife, Coral Dawn, and I embarked on a trip to climb to the 19,341 foot summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Consistent with her adventurous spirit and resilience, Coral not only endured trek and the summit day climb, but perhaps more amazingly exhibited great patience in accommodating my need to take pictures of almost anything with wheels over the course of our stay in Africa.

Wheels!  Why wheels?  Since a very early age I’ve been fascinated by anything with wheels – in particular the trucks and equipment that contribute to day-to-day movement of products and people. If you have a similar interest, I hope that you enjoy viewing my photo album (link below) as much as I did in taking and sorting through the pictures, as well as talking with some of the people you’ll see.

I’ve also been enormously blessed to enjoy an engaging career in Canadian group insurance, a vocation that exposes me to a range of related issues including certain aspects of the health benefits and the coverages that we enjoy in Canada.  When travelling, I find that my mind turns easily to contrasting the availability of those same services, products, and programs – and how those are dispensed, or not, in other geographic areas.

Over the course of two weeks in Kenya and Tanzania, I’ll readily admit to having missed more great photo opportunities than I captured. Here’s a sampling of some of the sights and scenes caught by my lens.
